Floor Lamps

When making your next lighting purchase, make sure to consider floor lamps. Their versatility regarding placement makes them an excellent choice in lighting.

Floor lamps outdo table lamps in so many ways. A traditional table lamp provides wonderful light for a raised surface like a desk, table, or nightstand, but you are limited in its placement to these raised surfaces. A floor lamp can stand alongside a desk or table and provide a wonderful light source. Many floor lamps have flexible necks to provide expanded functionality and can be adjusted to brighten any raised surface, wall, or an entire room.

Not only are floor lamps more versatile in the traditional tasks assigned to desk lamps, but they also have distinctly different uses. Since a floor lamp illuminates both above and below, they are ideal for sitting rooms to both illuminate the room and the area where people are engaged in conversation. With the option of designs from gaudy to very minimalist, a lamp can be added to a room either as a stylistic addition or simply as a lighting upgrade.

Floor lamps can also allow for more creative lighting of a living space. With just a ceiling light you are limited to bright or dark. Floor lamps can illuminate sections of a room, they can shift the visual focus onto a specific painting or piece of art, and floor lamps can themselves act as an attractive piece of furniture. With both antique and contemporary models available, there is undoubtedly a floor lamp to meet your needs.

As a functional piece of furniture, the floor lamp is a solid choice. As a versatile choice of lighting, the floor lamp is excellent. Of all the pieces of furniture you could buy for your home, consider a couple floor lamps as necessities. The floor lamp is a solid piece of furniture that makes a great addition to any room.

Floor Mats

Floor mats have always been indispensable in homes and buildings because of their functional appeal. A floor mat, or simply a mat, is a thick flat pad used as a floor covering. It is used to protect the floor beneath it. Floor mats are used to keep dirt out of the home or building and keep the inside clean. They are generally made up of a piece of fabric that is either coarse or soft.

Types of floor mats

A mat gets its name from the way it is used. The functions of the two common types of floor mats are apparent from their name – “doormat” and “wrestling mat.” A doormat is used to clean and remove the dirt or the dust from soles of shoes. Doormats are often made of coir (made from either coconut fibers or palm tree fibers and stalks). Some doormats are also made of nylon, cloth, rubber, aluminum, and other materials. Sometimes called “welcome mats,” doormats are usually placed by the front door where visitors are welcomed.

In gymnasiums, floor mats are very important. They are used to protect, for example, the wrestlers or gymnasts. Wrestling or gymnastics mats are used for shock absorption and tear resistance, so they need to have good compression qualities. They are usually made of PVC rubber nitrite foam, designed specifically for impact protection.

One interesting application of a floor mat is noise level reduction. In factories where noise is at harmful levels, for example, doormats are used to absorb sound. A specially-designed floor mat is used to enclose machinery and save workers from permanent hearing loss, excessive fatigue, headache, nervousness, and other illnesses.

Maintaining a floor mat

Cleaning a floor mat may pose a big problem. A vacuum cleaner can usually do the job, but if the floor mat is stained, you may need to brush or scrub it gently (remember that harsh scrubbing may damage the floor mat). Also, don’t forget to change your floor mat regularly.

Two Common Causes of Wood Floor Damage - How to Easily Prevent Damage to Your Laminate Flooring

Wood floors are a great way to add elegance and beauty to any home. And with todays laminate products they can easily be installed by the average person with simple tools. The only drawback to this type of flooring is the potential for wood floor damage to occur if you clean of treat your floor incorrectly.

Common Causes Of Laminate Floor Damage

Water Damage- This is the fastest and easiest way to damage your wood floor. Water damage usually happens when someone mops the floors with water or uses to much of a liquid floor cleaner!

Even though todays wood floors are made to be waterproof they are not 100% water proof! With this in mind you should only clean your flooring with dry mops or with specially designed flooring cleaner used very sparingly.

If you get to much water on your floor it will have the ability to seep in between the floor planks and attack the wood from the side. This is the most vulnerable spot on the planks and prolonged exposure to excess water can cause your floor to peel, buckle or warp.

Floor Scratches- This is another common form of wood floor damage that is easily avoided. The scratch in your floor come from one source, dirt and abrasives that find their way indoors.

The biggest carrier of dirt and grime is the bottom of your shoes. If you have enough of it on your shoes you will scratch the floor when you walk.

Over time you will start to see dulling in your floor where it is most heavily traveled. To avoid this problem remove your shoes when you enter your home.

Another overlooked cause of laminate floor scratches is furniture. The legs of the furniture can easily scratch a floor due to the weight they support. Anti slip rubber pads under your furniture legs can go a long way when you are trying to prevent wood floor damage.

Fixing a Buckled Laminate Floor

Laminate flooring is a great way to improve the value and look of any room. However if your floor is installed incorrectly there are problems that can occur that will detract form its appearance. One of the most common problems is a buckled laminate floor.

A buckled laminate floor is caused by to much tension on the floor and is normally caused by flooring that was installed in before it was allowed to acclimate to the room temperature. To avoid a this problem you should always allow your floor planks to acclimate to the room temperature by letting them sit flat on the floor of the room they are to be installed in. This will allow them to expand or contract with the rooms climate.

If you do experience a buckled laminate floor there is a very easy way to fix it. The first thing you will want to do is to remove the base trim from around the perimeter of the room. Next use a small pry bar to remove the spacers that are between the wall and the laminate flooring. After all the spacers are removed you will need to press down on the buckled sections of the floor to make them flat again, if you are not heavy enough a small rubber mallet can be used to lightly tap the floor flat. When the buckled laminate floor is once again flat you will need to install new spacers that were custom cut to the new width between the wall and the floor. The last step is to replace the base trim and clean up.

Although a buckled laminate floor seems like a major problem it is really an easy fix, if you are unsure on how to repair it your self always seek out a qualified flooring contractor.

Benefits of a Floor Buffer

Some common features found on floor buffers include washing, shampooing, cleaning and drying of the floor, with the end result being a floor that looks clean, bright and new. These machines perform the same work in minutes that it would normally take hours to do if you were to do it manually. Polishing and scrubbing of the floor can now be done by just pressing a button. Floor buffers can also erase unwanted scratches and marks from the floor.

Floor buffers basically consist of a tank which is filled with a neutral cleaner, and pads which are used for cleaning, scrubbing and mopping the floor. The first process using the scrubbing pads is cleaning and polishing, this gives the floor a shiny glaze. The next process is the floor finishing, this provides protection to the floor and helps it resist bruising. The final steps include touchup of scuff marks and scratches, then you finish with the buffing of the floor. If your floor is made of ceramic tile I suggest you use a heavy duty cleaner for best results.

There are numerous makes and models of floor buffers from which to choose from, each providing a variety of features and accessories. You will also notice a large variety of prices. If you are considering a floor buffer you may want to ask yourself a few questions: What type of floor will I primarily be cleaning? How often will I be cleaning? Do I really need feature x or y? Can I justify the added expense associated with those features? Use this information as a starting point for your research, continue with visiting local retailers or by using the internet.

Rubber Floor Mats Or Carpet Floor Mats?

Regardless if you have just recently purchased a new car or are looking to spruce up your old vehicle, adding floor mats can make all the difference. Whether you are purchasing floor mats from a car dealership or a automotive shop, the options are usually large and may be confusing. Generally, there are two main categories of floor mats: rubber floor mats and carper floor mats. When making a decision between the two materials, the choice is generally one of desired look and specific needs.

Rubber floor mats are the better choice for vehicles that do a great deal of hauling materials or people. Look to include rubber floor mats in truck beds or in the rear of vehicles and in trunks. In addition to being much easier to clean than their carpet cousins, rubber floor mats may offer a bit of skid protection, so that items you are hauling are not catapulted from one end of your vehicle to another. Also, if you live in an area of the country that experiences particular messy weather or have a great deal of mud around your home or place of business, you may want to consider rubber floor mats specifically for the clean up potential.

Carpet floors mats are generally designated for cars, although there is no one reason why carpet must be included in cars and vice versa. Generally, carpet floor mats are though to look better, and are often purchased directly from the dealership in a color that matches the interior carpeting of the vehicle. If you purchase carpet floor mats from an automotive store or an outside source other than a dealership, you may have potential problems in matching the color of the floor mat to the color of your interior. In this instance, consider using a coordinating color that will hide stains and clean up easily while looking nice with the interior of your car.

Although carpet floor mats are usually purchased for vehicles designed for transportation instead of hauling purposes, many individuals find them inappropriate. Especially if you have small children or pets, carpet floor mats can become easily dirty and stained with muddy feet or spills. For this reason, consider mats that are topped with a stain protective coating so that spills and liquids puddle on the surface instead of soaking through the mat. Although floor mats are generally the line of protection for the carpet underneath, very few individuals ever let this carpet show and they often look for clear protective vinyl or rubber mats to protect their floor mats. Keep in mind that any floor mat should be secured to the floor to prevent slipping upon entering or exiting the vehicle, especially if the mat is located under the driver’s seat.

Consider using rubber floor mats for their customization options, since many individuals want to create a look especially for their car. These customizations can be anything from a name or nickname emblazoned on the floor mat to a cartoon character or a favorite sports athlete’s number. With the booming customization business involving vehicles of all makes, shapes, and sizes, it is not surprising the customized floor mats have also become a trendy extra for vehicles.

In the end, the choice of rubber or carpet floor mats is completely up to you. Consider first your purposes of the vehicle and then your budget to determine which type of mat will best meet your needs. If budget is a main concern in your choice, turn to the World Wide Web, where you can often find great prices on popular styles and brands of floor mats.

What is a Floating Floor?

What is a floating floor? This is a question that many do-it-yourselfers ask themselves when they are researching laminate floors. A floating floor is basically a floor that is not nailed down or glued down to the sub floor.

There are several benefits of having a floating floor as opposed to a secured floor. First you can install it over the top of another flooring material like linoleum or concrete. This will help cut down on the amount of time spent on its installation. Another great advantage of using a floating floor is that you can reduce the amount of squeaks and creaks that your floor develops over time. Squeaks are created by loose nails rubbing against wood. By eliminating the flooring nails you are eliminating the source of the squeaks. Floating floors are also easier to install than secured floors. In most cases you can just snap together your floating laminate floor. This too will help reduce the amount of time needed to install your laminate floor.

Installing a floating floor starts by creating a level surface. This process may include sanding down the existing floor or removing the carpet. Next you will need to put down a vapor shield, if you are installing the floating floor over a cement sub floor, and by putting down the underlayment. After your underlayment has been taped down you will want to start installing your floating floor. To do this, simply snap the pieces together following the instructions that came with the floor planks.

Laminate Hardwood Floor Installation - 7 Reasons For Laminate Floor Solutions

A laminate hardwood floor installation rips out all the high-maintenance management and warping woes that accompany real wood flooring projects. Flooring frustrations are replaced with easy-care, authentic wood looks and textures that are a snap to install. What are the seven main reasons behind the phenomenal growth in do-it-yourself laminate hardwood floor installations?

Reason 1. Laminate Hardwood Flooring Installations Happy Over Any Sub-Floor

There is no need for an expensive and time-consuming tearing up of the sub-floor. Glueless laminate hardwood floor installations can be done with confidence and success over virtually any existing type of flooring. This includes vinyl, tile, concrete and real wood strips. The only exceptions to the rule are carpeting and real hardwood on concrete.

Proper preparation of the sub-floor is vital, however. The surface needs to be absolutely smooth and even. Sand down all peaked joints and other bumps. Use a filler material for any holes or uneven areas. Make sure that the floor is spotless. Any bit of gravel trapped under your new floor, will eventually become an eyesore.

Reason 2. Laminate Hardwood Floor Installations A Long-Term Investment

With today's technology, the core and wear layers of laminate flooring are of a superb quality. Floors are treated to be highly moisture resistant. The aluminum oxide finish of the wear layer ensures maximum protection against scratches, fading, scuff marks, and stains. Many manufacturers include warranties of between 15 and 30 years. By choosing a quality decorating and interior design product for your floors, and following installation and maintenance instructions carefully, you will be ensured of stylish, elegant looks for years to come.

Reason 3. Care-Free, Calamity-Free Flooring For Your Family Home

No overloaded parent has time for finicky floor care day in and day out. With a laminate hardwood floor installation, you will lighten the cleaning load significantly. A mop and brushless vacuum take care of most chores. When necessary, a damp mop is used for a quick wipe. Flooring manufacturers supply dedicated cleaners for tougher spots. If there is a mishap with lipstick or paint, acetone nail polish remover should take care of it instantly. Always check with your flooring supplier to make sure that any cleaning process or solution complies with your warranty conditions. If you deviate from the guidelines, you may void your warranty.

Reason 4. Banish Allergies And Asthma With Laminate Flooring

If your kids suffer from dust-related allergies, new floors may offer the solution you are searching for. No matter how diligent you are with cleaning, carpeting remains a dust-trap. By replacing the flooring surfaces of your home with laminate hardwood floor installations, you will minimize your family's exposure to the offending, irritating particles. The hard, smooth surface is easy to keep spotless. There are no fibres that are reluctant to give up their share of dirt. A quick wipe with a damp mop takes care of the dust problem in a jiffy.

Reason 5. Easy-To-Install Project For Home Remodeling Rookies

Laminate hardwood floor installations are a snap with the latest click-'n-go engineering. No more sticky, messy, frustrating and apprehensive adhesive struggles. Even the most 'unhandy' amateur handyman can tackle these glueless flooring projects with confidence. There is no need to call in the services of a professional hardwood flooring contractor. You can successfully install a new, ready-to-use floor within about a day. As long as you make sure that you don't have problems with moisture in the sub-floor, and are able to follow the manufacturer's guidelines closely, you should be able to complete the installation on your own.

Reason 6. Tempting Authentic Real Hardwood Grains And Textures

From Pergo Flooring, to Armstrong Flooring and Bruce Hardwood Flooring now include every real wood grain under the sun. Shadings vary from light and airy to the rich, warm hues of the darker woods. Textures are as close to the real thing as possible. Planks are now even beveled to give the appearance of real wood planks. A laminate hardwood floor installation can now come with rustic, weathered looks.

Recently the ranges have been expanded to include a variety of realistic ceramic tile and stone tile finishes, complete with grout lines. Every type of decorating or interior design project is catered for, from old-world to contemporary. The flooring planks can be matte or may present a gleaming, shiny face to the world. Thanks to innovative technology, the days of plastic and fake-looking laminates are long gone.

Reason 7. Much To Do About Mishaps On Laminates

If you have kids and pets you will fall in love with laminates. No only will you have far fewer worries about crayon stains, puddles, and other potential flooring fiasco's, you will know that in the event of a major accident, a section of flooring can replaced with ease. As long as you keep an unopened box or two of flooring planks in storage, you will be equipped to re-do an area of flooring in no time. Whereas a damaged carpet has to be replaced completely, a laminate hardwood floor installation allows you to handle the inevitable family mishap with a smile.

Have a bit of decorating and interior design face-lift fun by joining the laminate hardwood floor installation crowd!

Custom Floor Mats

Even the most beautifully detailed cars and trucks can become terribly hideous with the wring kind of floor mat. It sounds strange, but it’s true – the floor mat is the one detail that can make or break an otherwise well-kept car. That is why some car owners go so far as to have custom car floor mats made for their vehicles. If you, too, can’t seem to find the perfect car floor mat for your car, then you should read on for some insights.

What are custom floor mats?

Custom floor mats are made-to-order mats to specifically fit the floor area of a vehicle. The characteristics of custom floor mats are entirely up to the owner – he or she decides everything from the material to the color.

A vehicle comes with factory carpeting. But an expertly crafted and designed floor mat will improve its looks and will increase its life. You would be surprised at the growing number of people who order custom floor mats. Why spend so much on car floor mats? These people often say that they treat their car floor mat in the same way that they treat their floor mats at home – as expressions of taste and discernment.

Some car owners, for example, prefer their car mats to match their car seats. Some owners, on the other hand, are really more concerned with size more than aesthetics. Since they just can’t find car floor mats to fit their car floor as they desire, they have custom car floor mats made.

More practical uses of custom car floor mats

Custom car floor mats are more than just skin-deep. In cases of trucks and other vehicles they might be used to transport very delicate items (like glass articles or computer parts). In this case, specially made shock-resistant truck floor mats are necessary.
